How often should you change your bedsheets?

Most of us change our bedsheets when they look dirty or when guests are coming. But sheets collect sweat, skin flakes, hair, dust and body oils every night, even when they look clean. Changing them on a regular schedule keeps your bed fresh and more pleasant to sleep in. Here is some simple, general guidance for Indian homes.

The simple answer: about once a week

The advice most commonly given is to change and wash your bedsheets about once a week. This is a good, easy routine for most homes.

If once a week feels hard to manage, try not to go much beyond two weeks. Pick a fixed day, such as every Sunday, so it becomes a habit and you do not have to remember.

Pillow covers need changing more often

Your face and hair rest on the pillow cover for many hours every night. Hair oil, sweat, face cream and drool all end up on it. That is why many people change pillow covers more often than the bedsheet, for example two times a week.

An easy trick is to keep a few extra pillow covers. Then you can swap only the covers midweek without changing the whole bed.

When to change sheets sooner

Some situations call for more frequent changes. Change your sheets sooner if:

  • The weather is hot and humid. In Hyderabad summers and the monsoon, we sweat more at night, and sheets can start to smell faster.
  • Someone has been ill. Change and wash the sheets once the person is feeling better, and more often during the illness if needed.
  • You sweat at night. If you often wake up damp, your sheets will need washing more often.
  • Pets sleep on the bed. Fur, dust and dirt from paws build up quickly.
  • You eat in bed or children often play on it.
  • There is a spill or stain. Change and wash it soon, before it sets.

If anyone in the house has a skin problem or allergy, ask your doctor for advice that suits them.

Keep 2 or 3 sets for each bed

The easiest way to keep a regular routine is to have enough sheets. With only one set per bed, you have to wash and dry it the same day, which is hard during the monsoon or on busy days.

Many homes keep 2 or 3 sets per bed:

Sets per bed How it works
2 sets One on the bed, one in the wash or ready to use
3 sets One on the bed, one in the wash, one clean spare for guests or rainy days

This way, there is always a clean set ready, even when the washing has not dried. It also means each set is used less often, which helps your sheets last longer.

Make sure all sets for one bed are the right size. Our size chart and bedsheet size guide can help you check.

A few washing tips

Changing sheets often only helps if they are washed well. Some general tips:

  • Follow the care label on your sheets.
  • Wash printed sheets inside out and separately from very dark or very light items at first.
  • Do not overload the machine. Sheets need space to move and rinse properly.
  • Dry them fully before folding. Sunlight helps them smell fresh, but long hours in strong sun can fade bright prints, so dry printed sheets in shade or turn them inside out.
  • Store clean sheets in a dry, airy cupboard.

Make it a routine you can keep

The best routine is one that fits your home. For most families, that means fresh sheets once a week, pillow covers a little more often, and extra changes in hot weather or when someone is unwell. Having a spare set or two makes all of this much easier.
