Cotton, polycotton, satin or microfibre: which bedsheet suits Hyderabad weather?

Hyderabad weather is not the same all year. Summers are hot and dry, the monsoon brings sticky humid nights, and winters are mild and pleasant. The bedsheet that feels lovely in December may feel warm and sticky in May. The fabric you choose makes a real difference to how well you sleep. Here is a simple look at the four fabrics you will see most often, and when each one works best.
Cotton: the safe choice for heat
Cotton is a natural fibre, and it breathes well. Air moves through it, and it soaks up sweat instead of letting it sit on your skin. This is why cotton feels cool in hot weather.
- Good for: Hyderabad summers (April–June), and most of the year.
- Feels: soft and natural, gets softer with washing.
- Watch out for: it creases easily, and cheaper cotton can shrink a little in the first wash.
Not all cotton is equal. Long-staple cotton makes smoother, stronger yarn and feels softer. A lighter, plain weave cotton feels the coolest. Our article on thread count explains why a very high number is not needed for comfort.
Polycotton: easy care, a little warmer
Polycotton is a blend of cotton and polyester. The mix can vary, so check the label.
- Good for: busy homes that want sheets that dry fast and do not crease much.
- Feels: smooth, but a bit less airy than pure cotton. The more polyester in it, the warmer it feels.
- Watch out for: it may pill (form small balls) over time, and it does not soak up sweat as well as cotton.
Polycotton is a practical choice for the monsoon (June–September), when sheets take longer to dry on the line.
Satin: a weave, not a fibre
Many people think satin is a type of material. It is actually a weave, a way of weaving threads so that the surface is smooth and shiny. Satin sheets can be made from polyester, cotton or silk. Cotton woven this way is often called sateen.
- Good for: special occasions, guest rooms, gifts and cooler months.
- Feels: very smooth and slippery, with a soft shine.
- Watch out for: polyester satin can feel warm and a bit sweaty in summer. Cotton sateen breathes better.
If you love the look of satin, enjoy it in the winter months (November–February), when Hyderabad nights are cool.
Microfibre: soft and cheap, but warm
Microfibre is made from very fine polyester threads. It is soft to touch and usually costs less.
- Good for: mild winter nights, kids' rooms and spare beds.
- Feels: very soft, almost brushed.
- Watch out for: it does not breathe like cotton, so it can feel warm and trap sweat in summer. It can also hold on to stains from oil.
Quick guide by season
| Season in Hyderabad | Best choice | Also fine |
|---|---|---|
| Summer (April–June) | Cotton | Cotton sateen |
| Monsoon (June–September) | Cotton or polycotton | Microfibre on cooler nights |
| Winter (November–February) | Any | Satin or microfibre feel cosy |
If you only want to buy one kind of sheet for the whole year, cotton is the most comfortable choice for our weather. Many families keep one or two satin or microfibre sets for winter and for guests.
Other things that help you sleep cool
- Choose lighter colours in summer. They do not change the fabric's warmth, but a light room feels fresher.
- Wash sheets often in the hot months. Sweat and body oils build up faster. See how often to change bedsheets.
- Dry sheets fully before storing. In the monsoon, damp sheets can smell musty.
- Use the right size. A sheet that tucks in well stays smooth and does not bunch under you. Check our size guide.
