How to wash printed bedsheets so the colour lasts

Printed cotton bedsheets in pink, marigold and teal drying on a rooftop clothesline in Hyderabad

A new printed bedsheet looks bright and fresh on the bed. A few months later, the colours can look dull and patchy. Most of the time, this is not because the sheet was poor. It is because of how it was washed and dried. The good news is that a few small habits can keep the print looking good for much longer. Here is what works.

Wash a new sheet on its own first

New printed fabric can release some extra dye in the first one or two washes. This is common and not always a sign of a problem.

  • Wash a new sheet and its pillow covers separately the first time.
  • Use cold or normal tap water.
  • Do not soak it for long, and do not leave it lying wet in a bucket.
  • If the water turns a little coloured, wash it alone once more before mixing it with other clothes.

Never wash a new dark or bright sheet with white clothes. That is the fastest way to get pink school shirts.

Use cool water and a mild detergent

Heat and strong chemicals are the main reasons prints fade.

  • Water: cold or lukewarm water is best for printed sheets. Hot water opens up the fibres and lets colour escape.
  • Detergent: use a mild liquid detergent or a gentle powder. Use the amount shown on the pack. Extra detergent does not clean better and leaves residue.
  • No bleach: never use bleach on printed or coloured sheets. Even a little can leave pale patches.
  • Stains: treat a stain gently with a little detergent before washing. Do not scrub hard on the print.

Machine or hand wash: be gentle either way

In a washing machine:

  • Choose a gentle or delicate cycle.
  • Turn the sheet inside out, so the printed side rubs less.
  • Do not overload the drum. Sheets need room to move, or they come out half clean.
  • Keep the spin speed medium. A very fast spin twists the fabric and adds creases.

By hand:

  • Swish the sheet in soapy water and squeeze gently.
  • Avoid beating it on a stone or scrubbing with a brush. It is hard on the print and the fabric.
  • Rinse well until the water runs clear, so no soap stays in the cloth.

Dry in the shade, not harsh sun

This is the most important tip for Hyderabad. Our strong summer sun (April–June) is great for drying fast, but it also fades colours quickly.

  • Dry printed sheets in the shade or in light, indirect sun.
  • If you must dry in sun, turn the sheet inside out and bring it in as soon as it is dry.
  • Shake the sheet out and hang it straight. This reduces creases and makes ironing easier.
  • In the monsoon (June–September), dry sheets fully indoors with a fan before folding. Damp sheets smell musty and can get mildew spots.

Ironing and storing

  • Iron on a low to medium setting, and iron on the reverse side where possible.
  • Fold sheets only when fully dry.
  • Store them in a cool, dry cupboard, away from direct sunlight.
  • Rotate between two or three sets. Each set gets washed less often, and all of them last longer. Our article on how often to change bedsheets has a simple routine.

Quick checklist

  • First wash on its own, in cold water
  • Mild detergent, no bleach
  • Inside out, gentle cycle, no overloading
  • Dry in shade, bring in when dry
  • Low iron on the reverse side

Different fabrics need slightly different care. Cotton can take a bit more handling, while polyester-based fabrics like microfibre and satin prefer cooler water and a low iron. Our guide to bedsheet fabrics for Hyderabad weather explains the differences.
