Bedsheet sizes in India: how to pick the right one for your bed
Buying a bedsheet looks easy until you bring it home and it does not reach the corners. Or it hangs so low that it drags on the floor. In India, bed and mattress sizes are not fully standard, and the names "double", "queen" and "king" can mean different things in different shops. This guide explains the common sizes in simple terms, so you can pick a sheet that fits your bed the first time.
Start with your mattress, not your bed frame
The sheet has to cover the mattress, so the mattress is what you measure. The wooden frame does not matter much. Take a measuring tape and note three numbers:
- Width: across the mattress, from left to right.
- Length: from the head side to the foot side.
- Height (thickness): from the bottom edge to the top surface.
Write these down in inches. Most Indian mattresses are sold in inches, so this keeps things easy. If you have a very thick mattress (8 inches or more), keep that in mind, because a thick mattress uses up more of the sheet's extra cloth.
Common mattress sizes in Indian homes
Here are the sizes you will see most often in Indian homes:
- Single: 36 x 72 inches (3 x 6 feet)
- Double: 54 x 72 inches, and sometimes 48 x 72 inches
- Queen: 60 x 78 inches (5 x 6.5 feet)
- King: 72 x 78 inches (6 x 6.5 feet)
People often call a 72 x 72 or 72 x 78 bed a "6 by 6" or "king" bed, and some shops call a 60 x 78 bed "double". This is why your own measurement is safer than the name on the label.
The simple rule: about 12 inches extra on each side
A flat bedsheet needs extra cloth to go over the sides of the mattress and tuck underneath. The rule we use is simple: the sheet should be about 24 inches wider and 18 inches longer than the mattress. That gives roughly 12 inches to tuck in on each side.
So, if your mattress is 60 x 78 inches, look for a sheet close to 84 x 96 inches or bigger. A little extra is fine. Too little is the real problem, because the sheet will keep pulling off the corners at night.

A few quick examples:
- A 54 x 72 double mattress fits our Double sheet with room to spare.
- A 60 x 78 queen mattress also fits the Double sheet. Choose the Queen sheet if your mattress is thick and you want a deeper tuck.
- A 72 x 78 king mattress fits our Queen sheet. Choose the King sheet if you like the sheet to hang lower on the sides.
- Two single mattresses pushed together (72 x 72 inches) fit the Queen sheet.
- A large custom bed wider than 84 inches needs the Super King.
The exact size is printed on every packet, so you can check it before you open it.
A few mistakes to avoid
- Going by the name only. "King" in one shop may be "queen" in another. Always check the inches.
- Forgetting the mattress height. A thick mattress or a mattress topper eats up the tuck. Go one size up if you are unsure.
- Buying the smallest size to save money. A sheet that keeps coming off will annoy you every morning. The next size up usually costs only a little more.
- Ignoring pillow covers. A single set comes with one pillow cover. The bigger sets come with two. If you use more pillows, plan for extra covers.
